‘Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars is going to be wired into my account tomorrow after the ring is authenticated,’ I tell Audrey and David. My heart is still racing. I panicked on the way home. Audrey is only ever here for a short time, and I left her. ‘I asked the guy to call me if anyone is interested in buying them. We can keep track of where they end up.’

‘All we need now is for Stella to come up with something to use against fuck-face,’ David says.

Audrey tells David, ‘You need to be the one who goes to Max’s dad. He has to think the money is coming from you and Stella, and not Michael.’

‘Why does it matter?’ he asks.

‘Because she’s your wife.’

Jesus fuckin Christ, what?

David and I look at Audrey. She’s not joking.

‘Stella is your wife in the future, and I honestly think that’s the only reason Max’s dad has stayed away. He’ll finally see he has lost the control he had over her. When he sees you’re fighting her corner with her, he’ll know he doesn’t have a choice but to back off. The information you get on him is just security and the money you give him is enough that he can walk away feeling like he won. You don’t want him ever to feel that she got the better of him; otherwise he’ll be back and it won’t be for money.’

‘Stella’s my wife?’ David whispers. ‘But how, when?’

‘I don’t know. You two started dating pretty soon after you moved in together. I thought you were already engaged when Max’s dad came back, but obviously not. Maybe it’s my interference that’s slowed things down.’

‘She’s a pretty good catch, you know.’ David nods. ‘She really married me?’

‘So it would appear,’ Audrey says.

David marches out of the room and leaves the door open for me to follow, but I close it and turn to Audrey.

I’m a little jealous. Looks like David is going to get his dream career and the family life balance all sorted.

‘I think I’ll let David speak to Stella on his own. I haven’t spent much time with you today.’ I smile, but inside I’m dying, knowing she’ll probably leave soon.

‘It’s been a busy day.’ She grins. ‘We’ve got a lot accomplished.’ Audrey pushes off the bed and opens the wardrobe on the opposite side of the room.

‘What you doing?’ I ask as she pulls open boxes on the floor.

Irritation builds at the back of my throat. The last thing I expected was her to riffle through my stuff.

‘I’m looking for something.’ She discards books and folders of notes on the ground like it’s her own possessions she’s going through. ‘It’s finally dawned on me why I’m here this time.’ She pauses to read the title of a book, tosses it, and keeps looking. ‘I know I was all cryptic before, but I wasn’t sure how much to tell you. I realise now that by not telling you what you did, you didn’t do it.
